                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

RELATING TO THE HONORING OF THE HAWAII BUSINESS HALL OF FAME
   AWARDEES. 


 1       WHEREAS, the Hawaii Business Hall of Fame was established
 2   in 1990 by Junior Achievement of Hawaii and several other
 3   Hawaii business organizations to honor the state's business
 4   leaders who, through their entrepreneurial and civic
 5   activities, have made enduring contributions to the community
 6   and who may be presented as figures of inspiration for Hawaii's
 7   youth; and
 8   
 9       WHEREAS, the late JEAN FUKUDA exemplified the
10   entrepreneurial spirit and excellent management skills by
11   founding the gift stores Something Special and the small
12   business Wheatgrass Pacifica with her husband Wayne; and
13   
14       WHEREAS, JEAN FUKUDA'S business acumen has been used in
15   college business classes as an example of true entrepreneurial
16   innovation and determination; and
17   
18       WHEREAS, JEAN FUKUDA'S community work included exemplary
19   service as a volunteer with Junior Achievement, Small Business
20   Hawaii, Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation and the McKinley High
21   School Learning Center; and
22   
23       WHEREAS, ETHEL MURPHY exemplified the entrepreneurial
24   spirit and her management skills by having been a pioneer in
25   Hawaii's publishing industry in a 42 year career starting in
26   1955; and
27   
28       WHEREAS, ETHEL MURPHY has left an enduring legacy with the
29   Hawaii Business Magazine which is considered one of the
30   nation's best; and
31   
32       WHEREAS, ETHEL MURPHY has generously given of her time and
33   talents through community service that has benefited a broad
34   spectrum of organizations which include: the National
35   Association of Women in Construction, the March of Dimes, the
36   Girl Scouts, the Red Cross, the American Lung Association and
37   the Cancer Society; and

 2       WHEREAS, the late JAMES CAMPBELL arrived in Hawaii in 1850
 3   as a carpenter and through an astute entrepreneurial spirit and
 4   his business skills helped to found the Pioneer Mill company,
 5   which was the basis of his fortune; and
 6   
 7       WHEREAS, JAMES CAMPBELL built thriving businesses in
 8   agriculture, ranching and real estate that in his lifetime
 9   covered three Hawaiian Islands and California and which now
10   extends to over 17 states; and
11   
12       WHEREAS, respected in the business community in both Hawaii
13   and on the mainland, JAMES CAMPBELL was considered to be "a
14   fair and honest man," a good citizen, charming and devoted to
15   his family and remarkable for sound business courage; and
16   
17       WHEREAS, RALPH C. HOOK, JR., has served as a champion of
18   business and entrepreneurial education in Hawaii for over 30
19   years, by achieving accreditation for the College of Business
20   Administration MBA program, and serving as Dean of the College
21   of Business Administration at the University of Hawaii at Manoa
22   in 1968; and
23   
24       WHEREAS, RALPH C. HOOK, JR., was the recipient in 1999 of
25   the "Award for Excellence" from the Marketing Department,
26   College of Business Administration, University of Hawaii for
27   building bridges between marketing education and practice and
28   has received numerous other prestigious awards for teaching
29   excellence and leadership; and
30   
31       WHEREAS, RALPH C. HOOK, JR., has inspired thousands of K-12
32   youth through his exemplary leadership with Junior Achievement
33   of Hawaii with an association of over 30 years.  With Junior
34   Achievement he has inspired young people to value free
35   enterprise, to understand economics and to become workforce
36   ready; and
37   
38       WHEREAS, the late GEORGE FUKUNAGA clearly demonstrated his
39   entrepreneurial spirit and his extraordinary management skills
40   in a 40-plus year career that guided the companies now known as
41   Servco Pacific, Inc. and Pacific International Co., Inc. to
42   great success; and
43   
44       WHEREAS, GEORGE FUKUNAGA'S counsel was one that was sought
45   by business, governmental, education and many civic
46   organizations which included Goodwill Industries, Boy Scouts,
47   Better Business Bureau, and Iolani School to name a few; and

 2       WHEREAS, GEORGE FUKUNAGA lived to build a community and a
 3   way of life rooted in high moral and spiritual values, love and
 4   concern for family and employees; now, therefore,
 5   
 6       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
 7   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
 8   of 2000, that this body hereby honors all five inductees to the
 9   Hawaii Business Hall of Fame sponsored by Junior Achievement of
10   Hawaii, and celebrates their enterprising spirit, legacy of
11   business achievement and commitment to community service.
