                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

COMMENDING THE WAIMANALO HEALTH CENTER AND THE FOURTH-GRADE AND
   SEVENTH-GRADE STUDENTS OF WAIMANALO ELEMENTARY AND
   INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE WAIMANALO
   COMMUNITY STREAMS MALAMA `AINA (RESTORATION) PROJECT AND FOR
   BEING NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED THROUGH THE NICKELODEON KIDS'
   NETWORK'S BIG HELP CAMPAIGN.



 1       WHEREAS, the natural beauty of Hawaii is recognized around
 2   the world, the real beauty of our island State lies in its
 3   people, who, through, their personal relationships with their
 4   families, friends, and communities have dedicated themselves to
 5   protecting and preserving Hawaii's unique environment; and
 6   
 7       WHEREAS, sponsored by the WAIMANALO HEALTH CENTER, the
 8   Waimanalo Community Streams Malama `Aina (Restoration) Project,
 9   also known as the the WAIMANALO HEALTH CENTER's Environmental
10   Health Division's Water Quality Project, has provided Hawaii's
11   keiki with the opportunity to participate in the restoration
12   and cleaning of the banks along the deteriorating Inoa'ole and
13   Puha streams in the Waimanalo community, while learning about
14   water quality, native plants and streams, and the community's
15   history; and
16   
17       WHEREAS, The Big Help Campaign developed by the nationally
18   televised NICKELODEON KIDS' NETWORK, teaches children America
19   the importance of volunteerism within their communities, chose
20   to feature as representative of the Aloha State, the students
21   of WAIMANALO ELEMENTARY and INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL and their
22   involvement in the streams' restoration project; and
23   
24       WHEREAS, encouraged by Principal Marian Holokai of
25   WAIMANALO ELEMENTARY and INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL, 175 fourth-grade
26   and seventh-grade students, along with 55 teachers and parents,
27   participated in this important, educational project; and
28   
29       WHEREAS, on February 11, 2000, with the local and national
30   media present, the Waimanalo Community Streams Malama `Aina
31   (Restoration) Project participants commenced, filming the
32   students and other volunteers who actively participated in the
33   removal of weeds and alien plants, replanted native Hawaiian
34   plants and trees, and tested for improvement in water quality
35   from these streams; and

 1       WHEREAS, the Waimanalo Community Streams Malama `Aina
 2   (Restoration) Project is an outstanding example of the
 3   willingness of dedicated individuals who are committed to
 4   improve the quality of their community by working together
 5   through community-oriented activities to meet a challenge,
 6   address a need, or to fulfill a vision for the well-being of
 7   all; now, therefore,
 8   
 9       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
10   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
11   of 2000, that this body hereby recognizes and commends the
12   WAIMANALO HEALTH CENTER, WAIMANALO ELEMENTARY and INTERMEDIATE
13   SCHOOL, and the NICKELODEON KIDS' NETWORK for their outstanding
14   civic spirit and contribution to the State of Hawaii in the
15   restoration of the Inoa'ole and Puha streams in the Waimanalo
16   community and expresses to all of them its warmest aloha and
17   best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
