                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE PACIFIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS COUNCIL ON THE
   CELEBRATED OCCASION OF ITS TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY.



 1       WHEREAS, for the past twenty years, the PACIFIC
 2   TELECOMMUNICATIONS COUNCIL (COUNCIL) has assembled in a single
 3   forum, the providers and users of communication services, as
 4   well as policy makers, technologists, lawyers, scientists, and
 5   academics; and
 6   
 7       WHEREAS, with members worldwide, the COUNCIL has promoted
 8   the development and beneficial use of telecommunications and
 9   related technologies in the Pacific region by providing a
10   number of services, including organizing an annual conference
11   and regional seminars, sponsoring research activities, and
12   publishing the Pacific Telecommunications Review and a members'
13   bulletin; and
14   
15       WHEREAS, as an international nonprofit, nongovernmental
16   membership organization, the COUNCIL has grown to more than ten
17   times its initial membership of fifty members; and
18   
19       WHEREAS, an important milestone in the COUNCIL's membership
20   efforts in the mid-1980s was its successful ability to recruit
21   as "nonprofit" members, a number of governmental departments
22   and agencies responsible for national telecommunications
23   policies in the region; and
24   
25       WHEREAS, under the exemplary leadership and direction of
26   President JANE HURD, Executive Director HOYT ZIA, Vice
27   President and Treasurer DENNIS NIIMI, and Vice President for
28   Education and Seminars DAVID LASSNER, the COUNCIL's annual
29   conference has evolved into one of the most important annual
30   telecommunications conferences in the Pacific region, with
31   members participating in in-depth discussions of
32   telecommunications issues of global and regional significance;
33   and
34   
35       WHEREAS, the annual conference is also an opportunity for
36   members to network, receive updates on current and emerging
37   developments in telecommunications, share research, and conduct
38   business in a stimulating and informal atmosphere; and

 1       WHEREAS, as a result of the COUNCIL's work, people of
 2   diverse professional backgrounds in the Pacific are able to
 3   share in the issues and priorities regarding the
 4   telecommunications industry; now, therefore,
 5   
 6       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
 7   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
 8   of 2000, that this body hereby congratulates the PACIFIC
 9   TELECOMMUNICATIONS COUNCIL on the celebrated occasion of its
10   Twentieth Anniversary, recognizes the noteworthy achievements
11   of this organization in telecommunications for the Pacific
12   Region, and extends to them its best wishes for continued
13   success in all future endeavors.
