                     HOUSE CONCURRENT
                        RESOLUTION

  SUPPORTING THE HONOLULU JAPANESE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IN ITS
   CENTENNIAL YEAR. 

 1       WHEREAS, the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce (HJCC),
 2   a nonprofit eleemosynary organization, has served the diverse
 3   economic, social, and cultural needs of four generations of
 4   Hawaii's Japanese community; and 
 5   
 6       WHEREAS, the HJCC has through its various initiatives
 7   promoted Hawaii's business and economic opportunities through
 8   seminars, meetings, and business missions to Japan; and
 9   
10       WHEREAS, in addition, the HJCC has promoted projects to
11   benefit the broader community, including a health fair for
12   senior citizens, a Christmas food drive and luncheon for
13   children, and a major art exhibition; and 
14   
15       WHEREAS, the HJCC has also fostered international business
16   and goodwill between member firms and their counterparts abroad
17   through affiliations in Japan, and has encouraged participation
18   in international events; and 
19   
20       WHEREAS, the year 2000 marks the centennial year of the
21   HJCC, and in celebration of this noteworthy occasion, the HJCC
22   has a variety of activities planned for the community,
23   including:
24   
25       (1)  An inaugural banquet for the administration that will
26            lead the HJCC into its second century;
27   
28       (2)  Documenting the activities of the HJCC on video for
29            the benefit of future generations; 
30   
31       (3)  Participation in international events such as the
32            Honolulu Festival and the Pan-Pacific Matsuri in
33            Hawaii Festival; 
34   
35       (4)  Initiating action to revitalize Moiliili into a multi-
36            cultural business district and Japanese cultural
37            district; and 
38       (5)  Conducting a trade mission to Japan;

 1       WHEREAS, these centennial plans will highlight the HJCC's
 2   past endeavors, and celebrate HJCC's future as a continuing
 3   force for local and international business and community
 4   affairs; now, therefore,
 5   
 6       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
 7   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
 8   of 2000, the Senate concurring, that this body supports the
 9   HJCC in its centennial year; and
10   
11       BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
12   Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the Mayor
13   of the City and County of Honolulu, the President of the HJCC,
14   and the President of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.
