                     HOUSE  CONCURRENT
                        RESOLUTION

  REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF HAWAIIAN HOME LANDS TO WORK WITH
    AREA RESIDENTS TO DEVELOP USE OPTIONS FOR THE STADIUM
    BOWL-O-DROME PROPERTY.


 1        WHEREAS, for forty-five years, the Stadium Bowl-O-Drome
 2   served as a major entertainment center and gathering place for
 3   many of Honolulu's residents; and
 4   
 5        WHEREAS, with waning interest in the sport of bowling and
 6   the retirement of the operators, Stadium Bowl-O-Drome closed
 7   its doors on December 31, 1999; and
 8   
 9        WHEREAS, the property is owned by the Department of
10   Hawaiian Home Lands, a state agency with a fiduciary
11   responsibility to manage and utilize its assets for its
12   beneficiaries; and
13   
14        WHEREAS, the residents in the McCully/Moiliili area have
15   articulated a number of concerns over use of the property; and
16   
17        WHEREAS, residents have proposed a number of possible uses
18   or options, including developing a community/recreational
19   center, retaining the building as a historic site, state
20   purchase of the site, and passive park use; now, therefore,
21   
22        BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
23   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
24   of 2000, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Hawaiian
25   Home Lands is requested to work with area residents to develop
26   use options for the Stadium Bowl-O-Drome site that would allow
27   the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands to fulfill its fiduciary
28   responsibilities and meet the valid concerns of the community
29   in a manner consistent with the underlying purposes for which
30   the land is held; and

32        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
33   Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the
34   Hawaiian Homes Commission and the McCully-Moiliili Neighborhood
35   Board.
