                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE STUDENTS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds
 
 2 to the department of education to provide supplemental
 
 3 instruction and acculturation activities to help immigrant and
 
 4 refugee students achieve English proficiency and an understanding
 
 5 of the classroom environment so they can function normally in
 
 6 school.
 
 7      SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general
 
 8 revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $40,000, or so much
 
 9 thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000, and the
 
10 sum of $40,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal
 
11 year 2000-2001, to provide supplemental instruction and
 
12 acculturation activities to help immigrant and refugee students
 
13 achieve English proficiency and an understanding of the classroom
 
14 environment so they can function normally in school.
 
15      SECTION 3.  The sums appropriated shall be expended by the
 
16 department of education for the purposes of this Act.
 
17      SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
