                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO THE OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Section 13D-5, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 2 amended to read as follows:
 
 3      "§13D-5 Term of office; vacancies.  The term of office of
 
 4 members of the board shall be four years beginning on the day of
 
 5 the special election held in conjunction with the general
 
 6 election of the year in which they are elected and ending on the
 
 7 day of the special election held in conjunction with the second
 
 8 general election after their election; except that the term of
 
 9 office of board members elected in 1980 shall be as follows:

11      (1)  The four board members elected with the highest number
 
12           of votes shall serve four years; [the] and
 
13      (2)  The remaining members elected shall serve two years.
 
14           [Members of the board may be re-elected without
 
15           restriction as to the number of terms.]
 
16 Beginning with terms commencing on the day of the special
 
17 election held in conjunction with the general election of 2000,
 
18 no member of the board shall serve more than two consecutive full
 
19 terms.

 1      Any vacancy that may occur through any cause other than the
 
 2 expiration of the term of office shall be filled in accordance
 
 3 with section 17-7."
 
 4      SECTION 2.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed.
 
 5 New statutory material is underscored.
 
 6      SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
