                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO YEAR 2000 COMPUTER COMPLIANCE.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  (a)  There is created a joint legislative
 
 2 committee to serve as the statewide clearinghouse for Year 2000
 
 3 computer compliance problems.  The committee shall be composed of
 
 4 eight members as follows:
 
 5      (1)  Four members of the house of representatives, three
 
 6           members from the Democratic party, and one member from
 
 7           the Republican party, who shall all be appointed by the
 
 8           speaker of the house of representatives; and
 
 9      (2)  Four members of the senate, three members from the
 
10           Democratic party, and one member from the Republican
 
11           party, who shall all be appointed by the president of
 
12           the senate.
 
13      (b)  The committee shall serve as the clearinghouse and
 
14 focal point of all statewide efforts to bring both public and
 
15 private computer systems that may be subject to problems relating
 
16 to the "Y2K" phenomenon into compliance.  The committee shall
 
17 conduct hearings as appropriate to elicit information on the
 
18 progress of efforts to bring systems into compliance, and shall
 
19 make its findings known to the public in periodic reports as

 1 necessary.
 
 2      (c)  The joint legislative committee shall submit a report
 
 3 of its findings and recommendations to the legislature by
 
 4 December 1, 1999.  The joint legislative committee shall cease to
 
 5 exist on December 31, 1999.
 
 6      SECTION 2.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
