                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO MINUMUM WAGE.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Section 387-2, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 2 amended to read as follows:
 
 3      "§387-2 Minimum wages.  Except as provided in section 387-9
 
 4 and this section, every employer shall pay to each employee
 
 5 employed by the employer wages at the rate of not less than
 
 6 [$3.85 per hour beginning January 1, 1988, $4.75 per hour
 
 7 beginning April 1, 1992, and] $5.25 per hour beginning January 1,
 
 8 1993[.], and $5.75 per hour begining January 1, 2001.  Beginning
 
 9 January 1, 2002 this amount may be increased incrementally with
 
10 the value of the dollar based on the average annual consumer
 
11 price index for the State of Hawaii.  The hourly wage of a tipped
 
12 employee may be deemed to be increased on account of tips if the
 
13 employee is paid not less than twenty cents below the applicable
 
14 minimum wage by the employee's employer and the combined amount
 
15 the employee receives from the employee's employer and in tips is
 
16 at least fifty cents more than the applicable minimum wage."
 
17      SECTION 2.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed.
 
18 New statutory material is underscored.
