                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO ELECTIONS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Chapter 11, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended
 
 2 by adding a new section to part VI to be appropriately designated
 
 3 and to read as follows:
 
 4      "§11-     Election officials; assignment on election day.
 
 5 In assigning election officials to work in the various election
 
 6 day operational areas, the following criteria shall be followed:
 
 7      (1)  No parent, spouse, child, or sibling of a candidate
 
 8           shall be eligible to serve as an election official.  No
 
 9           candidate who failed to be nominated in the primary or
 
10           special primary election shall be eligible to serve in
 
11           the general election next following;
 
12      (2)  Officials of the various election day operations shall
 
13           not all be of the same political party;
 
14      (3)  In case of inability, failure, or refusal of any person
 
15           so assigned to serve as an election official, the chief
 
16           election officer shall appoint a person to fill the
 
17           vacancy without regard to party affiliation."
 
18      SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.
