                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO EDUCATION
 


BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 2 amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated
 
 3 and to read as follows:
 
 4      "§302A-     Student-teacher ratio.  The student-teacher
 
 5 ratio of each classroom shall not exceed eighteen to one in
 
 6 grades kindergarten through two, twenty to one in grades three
 
 7 through five, twenty-two to one in grades six through eight, and
 
 8 twenty-four to one in grades nine through twelve."
 
 9      SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general
 
10 revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $______, or so much
 
11 thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2000-2001, for the
 
12 establishment of ___ full-time equivalent permanent teacher
 
13 positions in the department of education.  The sum appropriated
 
14 shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes
 
15 of this Act.
 
16      SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.
 
17      SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2000.
