                   A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR KAILUA LIBRARY.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that it is reasonable and

necessary to appropriate funds to the Kailua library to help it

remain a quality library. The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation has

agreed to provide the Kailua library a grant of $119,325 if the

state will match the funds. If the funds are not matched by the

end of the 1999 legislative session, the grant will expire. The

grant and the matching state appropriation are needed by Kailua

library to pursue its family literacy initiative which will allow

the Kailua library to serve parents, children, and grandparents

and help them meet their life-long learning needs. This Act

appropriates funds to improve the Kailua library.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general

revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $119,325, or so much

thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000, for

improvements for Kailua library.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the

department of education for the purposes of this Act.
