DESCRIPTION:
Allows acupuncture practitioners to sit for the licensing
examination if they have graduated from a school that is in the

                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO ACUPUNCTURE PRACTITIONERS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  Section 436E-5, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is
 
 2 amended by amending subsection (d) to read as follows:
 
 3      "(d)  Notwithstanding subsections (b) and (c), effective
 
 4 September 1, 2000, before any applicant shall be eligible for the
 
 5 examination, the applicant shall furnish satisfactory proof to
 
 6 the board that the applicant has completed a formal acupuncture
 
 7 program and has received a total of not less than two thousand,
 
 8 one hundred seventy-five hours of academic and clinical training
 
 9 consisting of an academic program of not less than one thousand,
 
10 five hundred fifteen hours in the science of acupuncture
 
11 (traditional oriental medicine) and a clinical training program
 
12 of not less than six hundred sixty hours under the supervision of
 
13 a licensed acupuncturist, which shall result in the award of a
 
14 certificate or diploma at an institute, school, or college,
 
15 accredited [or], recognized as a candidate for accreditation, or
 
16 is in the process of applying for candidacy for accreditation by
 
17 any acupuncture or oriental medicine accrediting body recognized
 
18 by the United States Department of Education or at a foreign

 1 institute, school, or college with a formal program in the
 
 2 science of acupuncture licensed, approved, or accredited by the
 
 3 appropriate governmental authority or an agency recognized by a
 
 4 governmental authority in that jurisdiction and whose curriculum
 
 5 is approved by the board."
 
 6      SECTION 2.  Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed.
 
 7 New statutory material is underscored.
 
 8      SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
