                   A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF HAWAII.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

1 SECTION 1. Hawaii is the most geographically isolated spot

2 in the world. Travel to and from Hawaii is time-consuming and

3 expensive. We in Hawaii must and should make a special effort to

4 relate to other countries and build bridges between cultures.

5 One way in which we can do so is through the implementation

6 of "host country days" in which the legislature selects one

7 country to acknowledge each day of the legislative session. The

8 day will be acknowledged by the ceremonial flying of that

9 country's flag at the State Capitol on that day.

10 SECTION 2. Chapter 5, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended

11 by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to

12 read as follows:

13 "§5- Host country day. The president of the senate and

14 speaker of the house of representatives shall jointly denominate

15 each day of the legislative regular session as the host day of a

16 specific country. In addition to being memorialized in the

17 journal, the flag of the host country shall be flown at the state

18 capitol for that day. All flags flown shall be provided by the

19 host country, free of charge, to the State of Hawaii."

1 SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.

2 SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
