  HAWAII EMPLOYERS' MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPANY, INC. (HEMIC)
 
The purpose of this briefing is to inform the committee about the
the Hawaii Employers' Mutual Insurance Company, Inc. (HEMIC).

Mr. Robert L. Dove, President and CEO, Hawaii Employers' Mutual
Insurance Company, Inc. (HEMIC), is requested to appear before

        COMMISSION                                         WAM
        Establishes a permanent Workers' Compensation
        Commission to oversee the workers' compensation
        system.

        Clarifies that injuries incurred while and employee is
        intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled
        substance shall not be compensable under workers'
        compensation.

S.B. 841   RELATING TO WORKERS' COMPENSATION             LRE, WAM
        Includes treatment provided by a physical therapist
        assistant (under the direct supervision of a licensed
        physical therapist) to be compensable under workers'
        compensation. 

S.B. 153   RELATING TO MEDICAL FEE SCHEDULES             LRE, WAM
        Changes current medical fee schedule for workers'
        compensation reimbursement from 110% of Medicare to
        the annually adjusted federal workers' compensation
        medical fee schedule for use in Hawaii.

S.B. 1284  MAKING APPROPRIATIONS FOR COLLECTIVE          LRE, WAM
        BARGAINING COST ITEMS
        Provides fund authorizations and appropriations for
        collective bargaining cost items negotiated in the
        1995-99 agreement for Units 1-13.

S.B. 1408  MAKING APPROPRIATIONS FOR COLLECTIVE          LRE, WAM
        BARGAINING COST ITEMS
        Provides fund authorizations and appropriations for
        collective bargaining cost items for Unit 1 and their
        excluded counterparts, including the cost of salary
        adjustments negotiated between the state and the
        bargaining unit representative for FB 1999-2001.

        Provides fund authorizations and appropriations for

hours prior to the hearing. Testimony may also be faxed if less
than 5 pages in length, to the Senate Sergeant-At-Arms Office at
586-6659 or 1-800-586-6659 (toll free for neighbor islands), at
least 24 hours prior to the hearing.  When faxing, please
indicate to whom the testimony is being submitted, the date and
time of the hearing, and the required number of copies needed for
submittal.
