Honorable Norman Mizuguchi
President of the Senate
Twentieth State Legislature
Regular Session of 1999
State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committees on Economic Development and Health and Human
Services, to which was referred S.C.R. No. 164 entitled:

"SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION URGING THE STATE DEPARTMENTS
OF HEALTH, AGRICULTURE, AND EDUCATION TO FURTHER ENCOURAGE
CONSUMPTION OF FIVE OR MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES DAILY,"

beg leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to urge state agencies,
including the Department of Health, the Department of
Agriculture, and the Department of Education to promote awareness
of the importance of eating five or more fruits and vegetables
daily.

Your Committees received testimony in support of this
measure from the Department of Health (DOH), the Department of
Agriculture (DOA), the Department of Education (DOE), the
Vegetarian Society of Hawaii, and three individuals.

Your Committees find that since 1992, the DOH nutrition
branch has been the official licensing agency for the Five a Day
Program in Hawaii, and maintains an active coalition of health,
education, and food industry representatives to support annual
awareness campaigns. In addition, the DOA and the DOE are active
participants in promoting healthy eating through a variety of
promotional materials and activities.

As affirmed by the records of votes of the members of your
Committees on Economic Development and Health and Human Services
