STAND. COM. REP. NO. 598

                                   RE: S.B. No. 1544
                                        S.D. 2

Honorable Norman Mizuguchi
President of the Senate
Twentieth State Legislature
Regular Session of 1999
State of Hawaii

Sir:

Your Committee on Ways and Means, to which was referred S.B.
No. 1544, S.D. 1, entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO THE EMPLOYEES' RETIREMENT
     SYSTEM,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this bill is to allow deputy sheriffs of the
Department of Public Safety to retire without penalty after
twenty-five years of service if the last five or more years prior
to retirement is credited service in that capacity.

Your Committee finds that this bill would entitle deputy
sheriffs to retire and receive benefits unreduced for age in the
same manner as firefighters and police officers if the last five
or more years prior to retirement are credited service in that
capacity.

For purposes of consistency, your Committee has amended this
measure by making a technical nonsubstantive conforming amendment
to section 2.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your
Committee on Ways and Means that is attached to this report, your
Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of S.B. No.
1544, S.D. 1, as amended herein, and recommends that it pass

a SB1544 SD2

of the members of the Committee
