The House Judiciary Committee in collaboration with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Hawai`i, Community Alliance on Prisons, & the Drug Policy Forum of Hawaii is hosting this informational briefing to discuss the root cause of crime in Hawai`i and if our current policies and prevention efforts on drug trafficking, drug abuse and prohibition are working.  Topics covered in this briefing will include but is not limited to Hawai`i's rising incarceration rate, the exportation of more than half of our people to private U.S. prisons, Hawai`i's female prison population at almost 2x the national average, and how Hawai`i is the largest customer of Corrections Corporation of America at $50 million a year, as well as issues or concerns for improvement that the Legislature could address. 

 

The Judiciary Committee is honored to be joined in this informational briefing by three renowned speakers who will focus on Hawai`i's H.O.P.E Program, Intermediate Sanctions (sanctions other than prison), and the War on Drugs.
