RELATING TO THE INGENUITY CHARTER.

Establishes the Ingenuity Company to facilitate the development of intellectual property, uphold high labor and environmental standards, and provide funds for instruction in the public schools that encourages innovation by Hawaii's students.  (HB1670 HD2)

RELATING TO EDUCATION.

Creates an online learning task force to develop a systematic plan to expand opportunities for online learning, to enhance the learning experiences of students across the state. (HB598 HD1)

RELATING TO INNOVATION IN EDUCATION.

Establishes the Hawaii Excellence Through Science and Technology Academy Program to increase the readiness and motivation of public high school graduates to pursue post secondary training and career options in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.  Establishes the Fostering Inspiration and Relevance Through Science and Technology Pre-academy Program.  Establishes a professional development program to provide practicing public elementary, middle, and high school science and mathematics teachers with opportunities to increase their knowledge and understanding of recent developments in science, technology, and mathematics.  Provides stipends as an initiative for individuals who hold degrees in STEM subjects to obtain teaching certificates through the UH's post baccalaureate certificate in secondary education program.  Creates the Business and Education Internship and Mentorship Program.  Establishes an Eminent Scholars Program to be funded by the State Akamai Investment Matching Special Fund, to enable UH to provide matching funds for donations to establish at least five permanently endowed chairs in the STEM disciplines at UH.  Appropriates funds.  (HB1268 HD3)

RELATING TO EDUCATION.

Creates the facilities alignment commission to establish criteria for the selection of public schools to be constructed, expanded, consolidated, or closed, and recommend, based upon these criteria, a list of areas for new school construction, and of schools for expansion, consolidation, or closure.  Allows the legislature to disapprove these recommendations only in their entirety.  If no legislative disapproval occurs, requires the board of education to comply with these recommendations.  (HB19 HD2)

RELATING TO EDUCATION.

Establishes the Felix stipend special fund into which shall be deposited moneys received as repayment from students who have breached their contractual agreements under the Felix stipend program.  Appropriates funds from the special fund for special education teaching programs.  (HB15 HD2)

RELATING TO EDUCATION.

Creates an educational assistant loan program and special fund in the University of Hawaii.  Creates another special fund for certain loans to teachers and educational assistants to be forgiven after employment at rural public schools for a specified number of years as determined by the department of education.  (HB1530 HD1

RELATING TO EDUCATION.

Changes the membership and reporting schedule of the performance standards commission.  Provides for alternative assessments, including those based on the academic growth of students.  Clarifies the dual purposes of the Hawaii Educator Loan Program.  Appropriates funds to the Hawaii Educational Policy Center.  Appropriates funds for various programs to increase the capacity of the University of Hawaii (UH) College of Education to educate qualified teachers; meet federal requirements for institutional support of disability studies; and expand teacher professional development and mentoring.  Appropriates funds for the Office of School Redesign.  (HB1014 HD2)

RELATING TO THE RUNNING START PROGRAM FOR COLLEGE PREPARATION.

Requires the department of education to provide students who participate in the running start program with guidance in earning credit toward high school graduation upon the satisfactory completion of certain University of Hawaii courses.  Increases financial support for families of these students by appropriating funds.  (HB767 HD2)
