RELATING TO EDUCATION.

Repeals the transfer of the public health nurses who supervise school health aides from the department of health to the department of education; establishes the school health services program in chapter 302A; repeals the school health services program in chapter 321.

RELATING TO SCHOOLS.

Limits asbestos testing at school facilities to suspected asbestos-containing materials including exterior surfaces and as required by the federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 for interior surfaces, prior to any exterior or interior renovations or painting of school facilities.  Extends the requirement to conversion charter schools.

RELATING TO TEACHER LICENSING.

Requires the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board to pursue full teacher license reciprocity with all other states.  (SB 605 SD1, SB 100 SD1)

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO WORK WITH APPROPRIATE ENTITIES TO EXTEND THE LENGTH OF THE SCHOOL DAY TO ACCOMMODATE INCREASED PHYSICAL EDUCATION, ART, AND MUSIC REQUIREMENTS.

Persons wishing to testify should submit 35 copies of their testimony to the committee clerk, Room 230, State Capitol, 24 hours prior to the hearing.  Testimony may also be faxed if less than 5 pages in length, to the Senate Sergeant-At-Arms Office at 586-6659 or 1-800-586-6659 (toll free for neighbor islands), at least 24 hours prior to the hearing.  When faxing, please indicate to whom the testimony is being submitted, the date and time of the hearing, and the required number of copies needed for submittal.

 

If you require special assistance or auxiliary aids or services to participate in the public hearing process (i.e., sign language interpreter, wheelchair accessibility, or parking designated for the disabled) please contact the committee clerk 24 hours prior to the hearing so arrangements can be made.
