Dual Use Technology refers to technology which has more than one use. For dual use companies, developing new ideas and cutting edge innovations are at the core of the work. Hawaii's dual use companies have been successful in winning Federal research funding to develop state-of-the-art technologies. However, Federal research dollars only fund research, and do not fund products ready for the marketplace. Thus, companies fall into an unsustainable cycle of creating research, instead of creating finished products. Sources of "product" funding like those proposed in SB1688 and Act 215 are vital to the commercialization success of Hawaii's dual use companies. The following individuals will elaborate on the field of Dual Use Technology and it's role in Hawaii's economy:
